Books are the quietest and most constant of friends.......

and the most patient of teachers.

Charles W. Eliot

China was interesting, but it is good to be back in the classroom.  This week we will begin Unit 4 in Social Studies, Imperial China.  We will also be reading two short stories from our textbook related to China and the Chinese culture.

Hello!  I will be boarding a plane for China bright and early Monday morning, March 14th.  I will be away from the classroom for the following two weeks, returning after spring break.  I promise to come back with wonderful photographs, stories and historical information to enrich our learning environment.  Meanwhile Mr. Majors, a wonderful teacher who most of you know well, will be filling in for me.  The lessons have been prepared by me and the routine of the classroom will remain the same.  Mr. Majors will, however, be sharing his unique perspective and he may have a few surprises.  Have a terrific two weeks and Spring Break.  I'll miss you, but I look forward to telling you all about my adventures in China.

I will not be assigning Wednesday Weekly HomeWork over the Thanksgiving Break.  I will offer extra credit work and I will be giving make-up packets, but both are optional.

We are reading a very dramatic part in the novel The Giver.  Ask your student to explain what it means to be "released" in Jonas' community.  Encourage them to share the plot with you.  Repeating/describing a story supports comprehension.  Plus, it is interesting.  :)

"What did you do in school today?" "Nothing."

Try asking your child about the novel we are reading right now, The Giver.  Ask what "assignment" Jonas was given.  The correct answer is Receiver of Memory.  Hopefully this will begin a discussion about this wonderful story.  Have a great weekend!
