Mr. Sutten is the counselor for students' whose last name begins with L through Z in grades 6,7, and 8.  He has been a counselor at D.A.B. MS for over 20 years now.  He also is the CJSF advisor, holding CJSF meetings during lunch.

Hello parents and students of David A. Brown Middle School!

I am the counselor for students whose last name begins with A through K in grades 6, 7, and 8.

As a middle school counselor, my work includes enhancing the learning process, and promoting academic, career and social/emotional development for my students.

Counseling Services include:

Scheduling and academic planning

Assisting students in evaluating their interests, abilities, skills.

Assisting students in goal setting based on their academic, career and social/emotional needs and interests

Counseling individuals in one-on-one and small group settings

Providing Morning Meditation

Hosting Lunchtime with the Counselors (Mindful Mondays, Wacky Wednesdays, Friendship Fridays)

Hosting the Gratitude Club (Thursdays at lunch)

Providing support and assistance to students and their families as they navigate crisis and emergency situations

Provide referrals to school or community resources for additional assistance and information

I also lead our Stress Less Small Counseling Group for students that deal with worry, fear, and anxiety. The group includes the discussion of ideas, behaviors, feelings, attitudes, and opinions. Participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and behaviors that may help their personal development and adjustment. If interested, please let me know. Group will run for 10 weeks during both the Fall and Spring Semester. All groups offered are voluntary. Parent permission is required.

A little about me…I graduated from Cal State San Marcos in 2015 with my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I then attended Azusa Pacific University and graduated with my master’s degree in Educational and Clinical Counseling in 2017. I am committed to helping students, their families, and our community thrive, so please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you!

What is Social Emotional Learning?

  • Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

 

Why is Social Emotional Learning Important?

  • Self-Awareness: Youth who are more self-aware tend to exhibit self-confidence and a hopeful sense of the future.
  • Self-Management: The ability to manage oneself and regulate impulses leads to fewer risky behaviors and greater achievement of goals.
  • Social Awareness: The ability to exhibit empathy and identify and rely on available resources in the environment (family, school, and community) increases the likelihood that a child will develop positive relationships.
  • Relationship Skills: Risky behaviors are less likely to occur when youth develop strong relationship skills.
  • Responsible Decision-Making: Ultimately, it is the goal of most parents, educators, and youth-serving professionals to ensure the children in their care are able to develop positive, responsible decision-making skills.

 

Targeted Behaviors:

  • Ongoing development of the five competencies of social and emotional learning – self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making
  • Positive alternatives to many of the maladaptive and self-defeating behavior patterns in which a young person might engage, and the ability to use positive behaviors in many different situations

  • Building relationships and trust with staff, students, and parents
  • Providing the tools and resources that staff, students and parents need to support SEL in the classroom, at home, and in our community
